TextTown's Foundations
Daniel Magerman is the founder of TextTown, a pioneering initiative designed to enhance access to community resources and educational opportunities through text messaging technology. With a master's degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania, Daniel has dedicated years to empowering adults through diverse learning experiences.
His professional journey as a multilingual educator and instructional designer began with a decade of work as an academic writing consultant. He supported English language learning in Brazil through the Fulbright program and now teaches BUSN 329, Introduction to Intercultural Communication, an online course at Virginia Commonwealth University. Daniel also serves learners locally with Graduate Philadelphia, where he coaches adults as they navigate their postsecondary learning goals.
Daniel's commitment to leveraging technologies for social good reflects his belief in the potential of accessible communication tools to empower individuals and foster community.
Nearly every adult in the United States has a cell phone. Virtually every cell phone can send and receive texts, without wifi or 5G. They're built to connect us to the entire world, yet often isolate us further.
We can turn this tech narrative around. Let's leverage phones' global reach to improve life for individuals nearby and foster community connections locally. We don't need a million apps to do it either. Let's use what we've got — the simple, but powerful text message.
Are you also interested in leveraging already-available technology to increase access to resources and community? (Let me know.)
